Midas® Registration Renewed with No Time Limitation

CARY, N.C., October 2, 2008 – Arysta LifeScience today announced that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has renewed the registration without time limitations for MIDAS® products.

MIDAS® is a broad-spectrum soil fumigant that effectively controls a broad range of soil-borne diseases, nematodes, weed seeds and insects that threaten high-value crops. MIDAS® received a time limited commercial registration for one year from the EPA in October 2007. Since that time, MIDAS® has been registered for use in 47 states, including Florida. MIDAS® was developed to provide growers with an efficacious fumigant replacement methyl bromide under the Montreal Protocol. Growers around the world have long relied on methyl bromide as their choice fumigant and the phase out has left growers with few effective broad-spectrum choices. “The decision by the EPA to renew the registration of MIDAS® confirms the confidence we already had in this product as the right foundation for success for growers,” said Mike Allan, Global Product Manager for MIDAS®. “We have had a year’s time to examine the effectiveness of MIDAS® in the fields and have witnessed its successful results first hand throughout the United States. Now growers have the confidence they need to make a seamless transition to MIDAS® from methyl bromide.” MIDAS® is considered a foundation crop protection product because it is applied pre-plant to bare soil. MIDAS® provides broad-spectrum crop protection which can reduce the overall chemical need and helps establish a strong healthy crop that delivers high yields. Through years of trial work, growers in the Southeast are currently experiencing or have experienced yield increases similar or better than those experienced through the use of methyl bromide. A comprehensive data package supports the product label. Arysta is committed to ensuring proper handling and application of MIDAS® through the Arysta Qualified Applicator Training Program. To further ensure protection of workers and bystanders, the EPA has implemented buffer zones that are scalable based upon fumigant rate and number of acres applied, allowing growers to exercise more control over their fumigant use. MIDAS® is approved for use on strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, ornamentals, stone fruits, nut crops, vine crops (including table and wine grapes), turf, conifer trees and nursery crops. Arysta continues to build international support for MIDAS® with pending registration in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Turkey, Morocco, South Africa, and Israel. Additionally, MIDAS® trials are being conducted in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Brazil and Chile.
